Restore

Restore anything. From any moment.

Browse snapshots on any Mac or in the web dashboard. Pick a file, a folder, or the whole disk. By date. By path. By content. The last ten years of your work, three keystrokes away.

Features

Everything a backup tool should be. Nothing it shouldn't.

Deduplication

A 40 GB Lightroom catalogue, changed daily, is not 400 GB a year. It's megabytes past the first backup.

Encryption

AES-256 before it leaves the Mac. Keys wrapped by a passphrase only you know. We can't decrypt your data. Neither can anyone else.

External drive

Thunderbolt, USB-C, NAS — with the same engine. Plug in, back up, unmount.

Apple Photos Coming soon

Back up your Photos library, including Optimized Mac originals. The only backup tool that doesn't choke on it.

Fleet control

Business admins see every Mac, every snapshot, every device in one dashboard.

MSP-ready

Multi-tenant console across client orgs. One bill. One codebase.

How it works

Four steps. Nothing skipped.

  1. 1

Apple, Google, or email. A workspace is created for you.

  2. 2

    Install the agent

Download the notarized DMG. Drag to Applications. The agent lives in your menu bar.

  3. 3

    Pick what to back up

First-run wizard suggests Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and a destination. Override anything.

  4. 4

    Sleep soundly

macup runs. You don't. Restore from any Mac, any time.

Your data. Only yours. Always recoverable.

macup encrypts every file on your Mac before it leaves. Your encryption key never reaches us in plain text — we can't read your backups, even under subpoena. Two verifiable recovery paths — a passphrase only you know and a one-time recovery code — plus iCloud Keychain syncing your key automatically when it can. A lost Mac is a hardware problem, not a data problem.

Destinations

Three ways to back up.

One engine. One dashboard. Pick whichever destination suits your work — or use all three.

macup Cloud

Safe. Secure. Always available.

Fully managed, redundant cloud storage with compliance-locked immutability. No egress fees. No quota surprises. Your backups are there whether your Mac is on, off, or at the bottom of a lake.

Plug in. Back up. Unmount.

Any Thunderbolt SSD, USB-C drive, or NAS. Plug in the drive you already own. macup detects it, runs what's pending, and ejects it safely when done.

Your cloud storage

Your bucket. Your rules.

Any S3-compatible cloud — Amazon S3, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, DigitalOcean Spaces, MinIO, and more. Point macup at the bucket you already pay for — you own the storage, we own the engine.

Questions

If you were going to ask.

Why not Time Machine?

Time Machine is good at what it does: local-only backups to a single attached drive. It doesn't encrypt your data at rest, it doesn't handle cloud destinations, it doesn't deduplicate across snapshots, and it gives you almost no visibility into what's happening. macup is what you reach for when Time Machine stops being enough.

What happens if macup disappears tomorrow?

Your snapshots are written in a standard, documented repository format — not a proprietary blob. The repository stays readable whether or not macup is around, and you can export a full copy any time from the dashboard. Your data is yours, and it doesn't depend on us.

Can macup read my data?

No. Every file is encrypted on your Mac before it uploads, with AES-256. Your encryption key is wrapped by a passphrase only you know — we never see it in plain text. Our servers see ciphertext. We cannot read your backups, even under subpoena.

What if I lose my Mac?

Your encryption key is recoverable two independent ways: a passphrase you set during setup (we never see it), and a one-time recovery code we display once for you to save. Either one will restore your backups on a new Mac. And if you've used iCloud Keychain on another Mac, your key is already there waiting — but we don't ask you to rely on that alone.

Does this work on Intel Macs?

Yes. Universal binary, notarized, macOS 13 and up. Apple Silicon and Intel both.

Is this App Store or direct?

Direct download as a notarized DMG. The Mac App Store's sandbox makes the work we do — watching the file system, reading the Keychain, mounting external drives — impossible. We distribute directly so we can deliver a better product.

Stop hoping your drive doesn't die.
